This design references many elements of the arts and culture of Edo-period Japan. It features the magnificent face of the clouded leopard; his whiskers are wild and unruly, his facial expression alert and attentive. Behind the feline is a midnight sky; swallows sweep through the stars, willow branches flutter and a crescent moon glows in the distance. Overhead, intricate circular tsuba (sword guards) are strung together to create a border, while ancient bamboo flanks the remaining edges of this design. Details and measurements are noted in Japanese hand-script, echoing ancient zoological manuscripts from the 17th century, along with a Hanko stamp bearing the name Sabina Savage.
Translation of Sabina’s haiku within this design:
In the moonlight,
the leopard finds freedom
far from home
