Writer's block & what to do

Another question I'm always asked is; do I get writer's block & how do I get rid of it? The answer to that is simple. Think of your brain as a series of muscles. If you pull a muscle while working out; you change the exercise and work on other muscles, while that one heals. If you’re stuck with writer’s block; simply change the muscle that you’re using.

Stop writing & do something else, anything else, until whatever it is works its way out. If you like to cook; cook up a storm. If you like to decorate; then re-do a room, take on a new project. Do anything you can to keep your creative juices going until the block begins to lift.

Whatever you do; don’t force it. Just like a muscle; pushing yourself will make it worse. Ease yourself back into it & remember that it’s still inside of you & eventually, it will return. It doesn’t disappear forever. Just like a dancer, your muscles will remember the task and pick up where it left off.

For me, snowmobiling is the best way to clear my head. I always say; only the most-worthy thoughts spring to mind to me on a trail. In other words, I’m focusing my efforts on the task at hand; riding. I don’t let my mind drift. I couldn’t afford to.

When I do this, whatever problem I’m working out in my mind; the answer comes to me. Usually, all at once. The best ideas I’ve ever had have come to me while snowmobiling. They still do. I’m just going a lot slower on the trail.
